H.A.G.’s Best Gifts for Boy OR Girl Tweens

Are you like me, and often stumped on what to get the age group that is too old for many toys, too young for all electronics and gift cards? It is really a tough age to buy for, and still keep the fun in the gift buying. Here are some ideas that I have for making choices that will thrill most kids aged 9-12.  Again, I am providing buying options for your convenience, and some- not all-  may be affiliate links, where I make a small percentage as commission. It does not affect your price at all. These options are for boys OR girls. You’re welcome!

Top picks for Gifts for Tweens: Boys or Girls

Rubics Website

This is such a fun game. The space in the middle is actually for a slide that shows what the cubes need to look like, and the two kids compete to see who can slide their cubes the fastest into the given pattern. It is addictive and fun for not just the tweens, but the parents too. A family-fun situation.

Polaroid ZIP Mobile Printer

Okay, so yes, this is technology. But it is creative too! What I like about it is that it comes in 4 different colors for boys or girls to like, and it is compatible with Android or iOS. Instant gratification is tween-speak for happiness. Polaroid, my friends, is instant. We like this idea!

Pro Art 18-Piece Sketch/Draw Pencil Set

I like that this quality set is more advanced than just the run-of-the-mill pencils. It has charcoals and different lead-weights. Pair this with an inexpensive drawing pad, and a book about drawing (faces, animals, whatever the favorite) and you have a really nice gift that kids won’t ask for, but they will enjoy.

Sleeping Bag

My kids have finally grown out of their Disney character sleeping bags, and are somewhat embarrased at recent sleepovers…It is time for an upgrade! Any quality sleeping bag would work, but the Coleman brand is known for camping, so I assume they will be good for a quality sleeping bag. These are on my list this year, so I can’t attest to the brand. either way, these are easy to find at Target, and come in a few appealing colors for girls or boys. Check!

Yvolution Y Fliker F5 Green –  Flow Series

Okay, so at $164, this is a big ticket item. But any kid over 9 years old will love this thing. Knowing that flat surfaces are nearby the child’s locale are probably ideal if you are gifting this. It seems harder to operate on sidewalks or up and down hills! Any gift that gets my kids outside is a good one. They have a lot of great toys already, but this one seems pretty fun for sharing with their siblings too, so that justifies the big purchase too.

Yogibo Beanbags
Yogibo Website

This is a store my kids love, so I might lean toward the herbal wraps for smaller gifts. If you are in the market for a bean-bag chair…Tweens would love it. What I love about this brand is that the covers are WASHABLE. The cheaper chairs are sewn in, so that you can never wash them. Tweens are stinky. Sorry. I just like the idea that I can clean these, and then they will last. These products have a big range of prices. They have nice herbal heat-wraps that are $20 and they also have furniture that is over $300. In-between, there are some nice body pillows, study pillows (as pictured is $89), and beanbags.  To me it is worth the cost.

So this is it- I have other go-to items like legos, crafts, sports apparel and books, that are no-fail items for my own kids. I also love games as gifts, since they suit a variety of ages and are fun on the day that they are opened. I would love to hear some more ideas, so please share in the comments- I would love to know what you are loving! For now, I hope I have you some new ideas~ Happy Shopping!

H.A.G.’s Best Gifts for Little Boys

top 5 gifts for little boysIt’s that time of year, my friends! Many of you have to give gift-ideas to grandparents and other family members for your kids, along with shopping for others. Here are some of my picks that I think would make GREAT gifts this year. I put my own 2-cents in about why I love these gifts, and where you can purchase them. FYI, some-not all- of these links are affiliate links, so if you make a purchase through them, I get a small commission:

Kidoozie Deluxe Build-A-Road Toy

I love this train track- it is simple for little hands (age 3 and up) and the kids can configure the track by color, and make patterns however they want. My boys played with 2 other friends (ages 4-6) and they set it up, and broke it down several times. Big Fun!

Ultimate Kinetic Sand

I love, love, love kinetic sand. Not only for the littles, but honesly as a stress reliever for older kids. They love to just play with it like play-doh. But the benefit is that is doesn’t stick to anything except itself. This is a great present for kids, whose parents don’t like play-doh because it’s too messy (I happen to love it, but many do not!). The key with this sand is buying it with the tray as shown here. If you just have the sand, well…where are you going to use it? So if you don’t have a tray, you must buy one in my opinion, and you can just re-buy the sand as it gets used up. A great gift for kids that like to touch and make things.

Pokemon Charizard EX Fire Blast Box
(Toys R Us)

Okay, so I don’t know about you, but my boys are OBSESSED with Pokemon cards. They don’t know how to play- nor do they care. But they love the collecting part. I guess it’s kind of like collecting baseball cards, but for weird alien creatures. It is their own thing. They love it, and it keeps them VERY quiet and busy for a very long time, so I also love it! They trade with their big sister who is 10 and is into it too, so this is great for a wide range of ages!

Indoor-Safe Magnetic Dartboard and Darts Set

This dart board is so great! It is fun to play this with big and little kids, and we make up our own scoring system, but I am sure there is a guide to how you “should” play. We just play. It can hang on any hook, and if they opened this, you can bet they would want to play it immediately! Fun for the whole family- big fan of that!

Crayola Imagination Art Case

Didn’t you always love getting the “big” box of crayola crayons as a kid? I remember just loving new crayons and arranging the colors just so. This case is that same feeling, multiplied by 100! My guys love to make and draw and create lovely creations for me and themselves. This case was a specific request, and my kids absolutely love it! They feel like little professional artists with all their special markers and pencils. A great buy and surprise for any little person!

Well, that is a good start, right? These are gifts that I just love. I think the best age ranges are 3-10 years old on most of these. If you want more ideas, I sort of collect them on a Pinterest board, which is easy to check out, so please do. Happy Shopping!

Purgatory Chasm: A Massachusetts Gem for Families

I have to post about this before the beautiful fall leaves are all fallen! This is peak season in the Northeast and the trees are amazingly beautiful!

If you live in Massachusetts or within an hour drive, I highly recommend Purgatory Chasm as a park to not miss out on! I have known about it ever since I moved to Massachusetts- echemm- quite some time ago, and had never gone!  I pass this place almost every day on my way to work, and still had never gone…Until I did. And now I think I will go all the time.

The chasm is a path with rocks and nooks and caves to scamper in and out and over. It is challenging enough for grown-ups and easy enough that with assistance, my 6 year old boys could do it. It is NOT for elderly or impaired walkers in any way. For those people, there are easier trails at the park as well as scenic areas to appreciate the view and walking.purgatory chasm fun with kids

We took the hike through all sorts of fun craggle and crevices. It then goes around a loop that winds over the chasm and you can see down into it. It is super fun and challenging too. After our hike, we had to give sustenance to the weary, by way of ice-cream. Of course. How do you think I got my kids to actually get in the car to go on a hike? I bribed them, just like you would have, faced with two tweens and twin 6 year olds. And literally, this is a quote, what my daughter, the queen-tween, said:

This is pretty fun mom. I thought when you said ‘hike’ it would be boring. But this place is fun.

Whaaat?! Ahhhh! Did you hear that?! Fun?! I felt that feeling, you get when all things are good and right. It was awesome. I am so going to take this kid hiking again. She was happy. And outside. And it’s free. All was well.purgatory chasm fun with kids

Of course the day of hiking, followed by ice cream also included mini-golf and animals and a jumpy house, of which we didn’t partake (the animals or mini-golf).  There is only so much fun one mom can take, and honestly none of it sounded as good as the hike and ice cream.purgatory chasm fun with kids

This is a great local spot that is worth a day trip if you can. Bring a picnic, and then go get ice-cream at the West End Creamery. And do it soon, before all the leaves have gone. I plan to go once more before the end of October to try the corn maze at the West End Creamery after our hike at the chasm….and of course more ice cream! Have fun!
