Ultimate Coffee Chat: September

ultimate coffee

Like that picture? It’s from last year! I have been sharing my coffee-chats for over a year now and you have been telling me how much you like the general-style updates. So I am keeping it up- maybe late and maybe boring, but I am also keeping it real!

Here’s what I would tell you if you and I were sitting on my porch sipping our hot bevvies!

If we were having coffee I’d tell you: It’s freaking cold out here!

I love Fall!

Fall came fast huh? I am so glad since I LOVE fall. All things fall. The weather, the running weather, the smells, the decrease in bugs, the increase in routine, school starting, football stuff, soccer stuff, cozy things all around me like sweatshirts and blankets…I can go on! It goes without too much emphasis then, that I love pumpkin and apple everything! YES. Fall is my guy. I know it’s not quite leaf-jumping weather yet, but I couldn’t resist this picture- the boys were so little! Time is a-flying! Welcome to Fall my friends!

If we were having coffee I’d tell you: I love Fall for running.

Rolling to run

Now, I spoke about running weather. It is p-e-r-f-e-c-t here right now. Cool enough so I don’t run out of steam just because I am baking in the sun, and warm enough that I am not even layering yet. Perfect! Remember last month, I said I needed new sneakers? Well I still don’t have them and I am going okay- I can only think how great it will feel once I actually have some cushion on these feet! I am squishing an 18 week training plan into just 8 weeks (yes, I have a sense that I will tweak my planned runs quite a bit!) I mostly just use a plan so I can have an idea of what I should be running to be ready, but I don’t stay to it hard and fast if I am reducing the time like this- not if I don’t want to be hurt anyway! Do you use a plan for your racing or running? I’d love to know so share- please!

If we were having coffee I’d tell you: I just finished a great book

…which I will review in depth later this week on the blog, but it is so relevant for NOW. It’s this one:

In a quick snippet: It’s about four Russian late-thirty somethings who met in Russia but all live in NYC now. It revolves around a questions of our virtual lives- how we actually live in real life versus on Facebook or social media in general. Sounds boring, but to care about the book means to be invested in the characters- and I was. They are well thought out and interesting to me, as a window of what it is like for them as immigrants in the United States, but also how we share the commonality of the absurdity of online-lives. Pretty interesting, right? Stay tuned for a full review.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you: That’s all really.

Oh! Wait! I forgot too- I have been re-painting my upstairs bathroom!

Repainting this ugly thing!

Look at this beast! So ugly- but so useful. I will have to do a post on that too- I painted the cabinets (this times-two) and walls, and actually some of the hardware too- some of the paint they have now is awesome! It has awoken (waked?- what is the word for this?) in me both a love of painting and hate of it. I am not sure yet  how I feel. It is making the rest of my house look perfectly awful though, so I need to get cracka-lackin’ and paint the rest of it! Good thing I am STILL not working right?! Ha! Gotta look on the bright side my friends, keeping it sunny!

Have a wonderful holiday weekend and I loved sharing my porch with you this month!

The 3-R’s of Summer: Running, Reading & Relaxing!

3 R's of SummerIf you have been visiting this blog for any length of time, you know that I am a little bit of this and a little bit of that. I have come to the conclusion in my many wise years, and as I enter my mid 40’s (erg!) that I am a jack of all trades, master of not much! {Ouch}

Well, I am a master of picking up kids’ crap and changing diapers and cuddling at length, and breaking up fights, and all those mommy-type tasks, but the rest of my life is a work in progress! Summer is no exception.  I like to do a lot of things to be productive and get things done, but we all need some downtime, AKA: “self-care- especially us parents.

Can I get an “Amen!”? Yes, y’all!

My summer needs for self-care call for the 3-R’s:

Running

Not a long list of races, or a long social media selfie-showoffie of my miles on end. No. Just running without a watch, no ear-buds, and sort of meditating on life runs. This is my summer jam. I am getting my mojo back to do some races for the fall. I am not a hot-weather runner so this summer thing is mixed with PIYO, the gym, and fun-runs.  In these bad boys:

And when I say bad, I mean OLD! I have loved these sneaks- they are new in this picture!- for lots of loved miles. My knees are hurting so I know I need to shop *birthday hint!*! Suggestions are welcomed here too- I am leaning toward New Balance for my wide toe box, so if any of you have this too, I am all ears!

Reading

You can read all about my short-list for the summer, or you can follow along on my Goodreads updates, but rest assured, I am reading for pleasure and not just doing book reviews or since I am less than employed right now, no professional reading at all. So just fun books. If you have any recommendations, I will take ’em! My current read:

Relaxing

In between all the work of not-working (looking for a job, endless laundry, shuttling kids) I am trying to relax. Stop laughing. I know I am not working but I seem to be crazy busy. I think it’s the lack of schedule that makes me a little bit crazy. I am actually missing my routine of the school year! I caught up on my movies (Boss Baby and Wonder Woman- which by the way is super fun!), visited with friends, and been lucky enough to hit the beach, and have some nice family fun- hiking, eating out, playing games, etc.

Ultimate Coffee Chat: July

Ack! Did you miss the Ultimate Coffee Chat for June?! I did! I made it a point to join up this week, though to be honest, I may or may not be on a beach today, and let technology post this for me {wink!}.

If you are as relieved that June is over as I am, can I get a “Heeeey!”?

I really had a hard June. It was healthy and happy but lots of change. For someone like me who loves change and is borderline ADHD, that is saying a lot. I will post on the topic of losing one’s job (ugh) later, but for now, let’s just say, delving into unemployment and looking for a new job is not ideal for one’s self esteem! I am not a person who shouts my strengths from the rooftop, so cover letters and all that jazz can be hard: “I have 8 years of experience…..being awesome!” is sort of how I feel I need to be when selling myself in an interview, but in reality, I sort of am just like, “please, please, please give me a job“! But I know we all have been there, so I am trying to keep a positive outlook and in general it’s working!

If we were having coffee I’d tell you I did the Advocare 10-Day Challenge in June.

spark and advocareFull disclosure is that I sell the stuff. Advocare, I mean. But honestly, I sell it so I get the awesome discount! I absolutely love how I feel when I am doing a challenge and also how it motivates me to drink more water, take my vitamins, and generally take care of myself, which can sometimes go by the wayside (you hear me moms?!). I decided to re-group before summer so I can sort of stop my eating off the kids’ plates and start eating salads and chicken and all that…which brings me to this:

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that my Dr. says I have plaque in my arteries! Say whaaaa?

Seriously?! I am 43 y’all! He wants me to go on a statin- which I have heard good and bad about. He said, on paper I am a study in great health: run regularly, eat really healthy, cholesterol is great…but my family history is awful! Darn that DNA! I have just a bit of plaque, but honestly, it scared me off my egg yolks and butter! Lots of diets (paleo) say lard and eggs and butter are the bomb, but for me it just wouldn’t work- it would literally be a bomb to my body! I have to dial back on the beef and up the egg-whites and chicken my friends! End to baking with butter and the start of some new healthy recipes! Do any  of you have experience with a statin? I would love to know in the comments!

Staying healthy as I age

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I am really looking forward to the 4th:

We are headed to family and fireworks! I love how excited the kids get and a vacation of sorts is just what we need! I always feel like it’s the start of summer after the 4th of July, so that means I can officially go to the beach now!fishing at the beach

That’s really all I have for now- lots of sports for the kids: field hockey, summer basketball leagues, baseball, and pick-up soccer! We are full of summer things to do! If you visited here looking for actual coffee, since this IS the “Ultimate Coffee” chat, I will add a couple of fun iced-versions! Have a great week!
