Grapefruit Salty Dog with Fizz #FoodieExtravaganza

grapefruit salty dog with fizzI know it’s mid-week and you probably aren’t thinking about tossing back any cocktails yet…or maybe you are! But I want to get you geared up for your weekend with this yummy cocktail! This is my favorite adult beverage- I am not sure if it’s the grapefruit or the salt or the fizz, but since I already love gin & tonics and I love grapefruit juice, this just makes my cocktail-day!

My sister in law was obsessed this past winter with grapefruit and vodka as her go-to drink. While I love that too, Vodka is just not my guy- if you love this drink, it is actually called a “Greyhound”- hence, when you switch it up and add salt and switch to gin, it’s a “Salty Dog.” Get it?

Isn’t that easy to remember? Now you have two fun drinks using grapefruit juice!

Here’s the formula:

I like to make it in a ratio of 1-part gin to 2-parts juice and a splash of seltzer if I am making them by the glass- but honestly…I make these by the pitcher for parties so I need to adapt it a bit so my guests aren’t dropping like flies on a barstool! Since I don’t want that, I change the ratio to more of a 1:3 ratio and add more seltzer since fizz is the best for party-cocktails, don’t you think?

Start with grapefuit juice and a salted rim:

Add the fizz and Gin:

For 2 cocktails of Salty Dogs:

3 ounces of gin
6 ounces of grapefruit juice (fresh is best, but carton is okay)
grapefruit or another citrus flavored seltzer
kosher salt

To rim a glass in salt, wipe the edge with a grapefruit slice or water and then put top-down onto a plate with kosher salt sprinkled in it. Roll the glass until totally salty on the edges.

Fill each glass with ice.

Squeeze the grapefruit juice and add half to each glass. Split the gin into the two glasses.

Add the seltzer to top off the drinks. Stir gently and serve.

For a Pitcher of Salty Dogs:

8 ounces of gin
24 ounces of grapefruit juice
2 cans of seltzer

Mix the gin and juice in a pitcher and chill. Don’t add the seltzer yet.

Rim the glasses in salt just before your guests arrive and set them up on a tray.

Fill glasses with ice.

Add the seltzer to the pitcher. Stir.

Pour the cocktails and enjoy.

Yeah never had either as well but I am more of a gin gal so the salty dog looks so good. So like seltzer tabs from the drugstore for upset tummies???? Middle of the week = cocktail for sure.
