Homemade DIY Hot Chocolate: With or Without Powdered Milk

hot cocoa

With OR without? Why 2 versions?

Because there are times, that I want a nice cup of hot cocoa that tastes yummy and is not horrible for me…And there are other times, where I am out of milk (of any kind) and have 10 neighborhood kids in my house who want cocoa.

Those days are coming, my friends. Very soon! And I intend to be ready. So here it is:

This the ‘Cocoa I can serve the adults’ Version:
(without powdered milk)

homemade diy cococa

3/4 cups of cocoa powder
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 tsp. kosher salt

Mix. Store in an airtight container.
To serve: Scoop 1/4 cup or 2 1/2 Tbsp. of the mix with 3/4 cup of hot milk (almond, cashew, rice, cow). Stir and enjoy.

This is the ‘Kids are ready right now‘, version:
(with powdered milk)

homemade diy cococa

3/4 cup of sugar
3 cups (a 9.6 oz bag) of powdered milk (I only use Carnation– the others are nasty tasting)
1/2 cup cocoa
1/4 tsp. kosher salt

Mix. Store in an airtight containter.
To serve: Scoop 1/4 cup or 2 1/2 Tbsp. of the mix with 3/4 cups of hot water. Stir and enjoy.

Of course, you can package these in a really cute, Pinterest-worthy way and gift them to people during the holidays. I actually recommend this highly. I love cocoa. It is dessert, without having dessert. These are great options for keeping lots of extra things out of your kids or your diet, by using easy to find ingredients and making this yourself at home. Some kids love cocoa with marshmallows, or whipped cream, or my kids love when I serve cocoa with a Hershey Kiss (or some chocolate chips)- so they can have that extra little bit of melty chocolate in the bottom of the cup~ yum.
