Red Sangria for Summer – with Pinot Noir?!

Inspired by a great Pinterest picture and recipe of a red-Sangria, I created this yummy red-wine summer drink.  The original recipe used a sweetened wine, which I wasn’t up for, nor did I have on hand! I did however have a bottle of gifted Pinot Noir from a few months back and wondered if anyone ever made Sangria with Pinot Noir- Usually the recipes that I see use super sweetened wines, like Moscato, or I have also seen Merlot with a bit of sugar added to the mix. So thinking that I would sort of fit in-between these two in the “sweet” scale, I tried the Pinot, and low and behold: It works!

I left it to chill overnight, to blend all the flavors, and then when I served it, I filled each glass to 1/2 full, then topped with seltzer (I used both raspberry-lime, and lemon-lime- these are no-sugar added seltzers).  Garnish with some fruit, and you are good to go…until you run out!

Red Sangria…with Pinot Noir?!

This is a great summer alternative to white-sangria, and it's not overly sweet.

  • 2/3 cup triple sec
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 bag frozen mixed berries
  • 1 sliced lime
  • 1 sliced lemon
  • 1 sliced orange
  • 1 bottle Pinot Noir
  • Add at the end: seltzer (plain or fruit flavored, but unsweetened)

In a large pitcher add the triple-sec, sugar, and all the fruit. Mix. Add the entire bottle of Pinot Noir and stir. Let chill for atleast 2 hours or overnight for the best flavor.

Serve in a wine glass (or party cup!) 1/2 full, and then top the other 1/2 with seltzer.

You can also pour the sangria as mixed into a pitcher and just top the pitcher with seltzer- but then you can't save the leftovers or let people vary the strength of the alcohol.

I am adding my post to some other great summer barbecue recipes linked up at #FOODIEFRIDIY at A Dish of Daily Life blog.  I wish you a wonderful weekend! My own weekend is full of parties, and a sleepover party for lots of 10 year olds…I may be making another pitcher of this Sangria for Saturday too!
