Ultimate Coffee Date: December

ultimate coffeeGood morning & happy first Saturday of the month…of December! Wow. So November is done. How did that happen?!  Anyhoo… Welcome to my monthly link-up up with several other bloggers who share a love of chatting and coffee- If you were here with me, and I handed you a mug of coffee, and maybe that cookie that I may have wished that I baked, but really I may not have…well, here’s what I would tell you about what is new with me:

If we were having coffee, I would tell you… That I have lots to do to be “ready” for the holidays this year! No family holiday photos yet. No shopping done yet. Not a one. And to be honest, I am kind of happy to be the slow-poke this year. I feel like I want to do things, when I want to do them…not just because I have always done them a certain way. Choosing to enjoy the season I guess, is making me a little slower. Since slower, means I am sitting on my behind a lot, I have been pinning like crazy and have lots of ideas for what will make some good gifts, when I finally get around to shopping, and you can see them here.

Maybe soon, I can find a moment to order some of these lovelies up and feel a bit more prepared. I am hoping to hit a few local artisan sales and Etsy shops soon. Love your local!

If we were having coffee, I would tell you…That I just now took down our pumpkins, and put up the wreath outside. We got our tree last night, but in our house, we always let the branches drop for a day, before we decorate. So today will be a decorating day…and also a 2nd Thanksgiving! My beautiful cousin is coming over so I can have an excuse to make her dinner- and we agreed on another turkey with all the fixings! I am not sure the kids will love this, but I never got leftovers, and she never got leftovers, so this is officially our “Left-over do-over.” Cute.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you… how hard Karma is coming back like a boomerang to hit me square in the face. These tweens of mine are sucking the life-blood out of the house, and the littles are sick of all the noise. They literally covered their ears more than a few times this past week, from all the yelling, and it is real, and it’s not good. Why do the tweenies have so much drama?!  Holy hormones. My dear scha-sizzle. I have been trying to foster some good-fun to counter all the craziness, so we’ve been doing some one-on-one time, some movie nights, and some extra snuggles at night. I am not sure it’s working, but I get to remember how nice they can be and they remember that they don’t hate me, all the time. Oy.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you…That thankfully, the magic of this time of year, can kind of counteract the maddening nature of my household.  All this fun: the piney smell of this tree, the Hanukkah candles, the Christmas ornaments and decorating, the parties with friends, visits with family, cookies to make (and to eat), and all the other fun little traditions to share with the kids. I just love this part. My kids have been indulging in the Christmas specials on television too, which are so fun. I love some of these movies, so much, and all these little parts create the magic of the season that help us all remember the good stuff. It is just wonderful.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you…That I have been totally motivated to follow along with some other very motivated peeps this week for the #WinterChill workout challenge with Lucie @runmommyrunca. It is getting me moving every day, and I am also moving for a squat/ab/water 30 day challenge with Diatta at #getabsandsquats @FemmeFitaleFitClub. These ladies are keeping me going, and I tell you…just like parenting, it “takes a village” sometimes to get me getting up before dark and into the cold! I thank them all!

If we were having coffee, I would tell you…That I am so glad and thankful to have you reading this, and I hope you will share what you are up to too~ I am looking forward to lots of great info to share with you this month, including a giveaway, a discount, and lots of recipes! Happy Saturday!

Organizing Christmas Lights

So are any of you procrastinators?

I hope so.  That is, I hope that you might in the slightest chance find this post useful.  Seeing how Christmas was a month ago and all…Ah, well. Here we are. Taking down our outside lights. You didn’t think I still had inside lights up did you?! (Those came down last week). Eh-hem. Anyhoo…

I have been the one who wraps and puts away the tree decorations every year for a while now.  And really, I thought that I was doing just fine without buying any additional organizers for the ornaments or lights. Being practical (re. frugal!), I use what I have on hand: plastic bags from the grocery store and cardboard boxes.  I wrap each fragile ornament with a bag and put it in our box of ornaments marked, “fragile.”  For the lights, I roll each strand separately and put inside a plastic bag.  I can’t believe I just told you this.  You don’t need to know this! The point is…This has worked.  I had no idea, nor did I care to have any idea how other people were putting away their decorations!

But now, enter my husband.  He decided to get “organized” this year and buy one of those, what he calls a spool for the lights. I scoffed.  Who needs to spend more money to put things away?

This guy. That is who.

I love these things!   Yes, my friends, for less than $2. per spool, we are officially organized for next year!  …and I have to say it is quite nice.

Here’s a pic:

We wrapped the whole inside tree on one spool!

lights organizerThey are from Home Depot, but I don’t know the brand.  My husband is pretty psyched about them and feeling accomplished and ready for next year.

Personally, I also love having it so organized now.  I think I may have to break down and get an ornament organizer myself while the sales are still going on! On a roll people. Please don’t tell me in the comments how you organize your ornaments.  Unless it is spectacular, like this little number, I just don’t want to know {wink-smile}!

12 Days of Christmas Cookies, Day 12!: Haystack Cookies

haystacksSo I hope you’ve been paying attention to the 12 Days of Christmas Cookies for the past few weeks- But maybe not too closely!   If you were, you might wonder about those meringue cookies that were going to be Day 12…well, no cream of tartar put the kiebosh on that one for us, and now my next favorite and very weird cookie (if you can even call it that) is the Haystack- Day 12.

My family loves these.  But be warned: they don’t freeze well.  They freeze, but they break apart a bit.  So I left them for the last  cookie, so you can package up all your neighbor gifts and put these in at the last minute…or you can keep them all for yourself, because your family will attack the boxes if you try to get them out the door and not in their bellies!  Your choice.

12 Days of Christmas Cookies, Day 12!: Haystack Cookies

  • 1 cup butterscotch chips
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter (not the natural kind)
  • 2 cups chow mein noodles

Melt the chips and peanut butter in the microwave in a safe bowl. Stir.

Mix in the chowmein noodles, crushing them up a bit as you mix.

Drop by the spoonful onto waxed paper. Let cool until set. Keep in the refrigerator.

Seriously.  That was easy, right?
