Cleaning the Car Without Chemicals: E-cloth Review

So many of you know how much, I love my E-cloths for use inside my house, and if you read this blog, you may have seen my review for them a while back. This post was updated in August of 2017 for links and deleting giveaway content.

I agreed to review….{drumroll please}…. the Interior Car Kit for ecloth. Win. Win! And by the way…these little cloths aren’t only for your car- you can use these to clean your bikes after a long outside ride, or your boat if you are a boater (duh) and probably any outside toys that have chrome to polish and grime to clean!

Full Disclosure: I received a free Interior Car Kit from E-cloth in exchange for writing a review on the blog. However, and as always, any and all opinions are genuinely my own. This post contains affiliate links, which means that if you order from one of the product links, I’ll receive compensation. It does not affect your price at all. See my full disclosure page.

If you follow my blog, you know that I have been running a Clear the Clutter Challenge this month. While a lot of my clutter-clean up is focused on the inside of my house, you all know the garage is the palace (I did NOT mean to write ‘place’) of clutter for the outside…and the cars with all the shuttling to and from soccer practices, basketball, or road-trips can get pretty knarly themselves!

Before I get ahead of myself though, I have a few tips on tidying your cars before we even look at the dirt and start cleaning them and testing out the new cloths!

DeCluttering the Car:

#1– Get some bins to keep in the car. These can be bags or boxes or anything that will keep items from rolling around your trunk or under-foot as you drive (danger!)

#2 – Make an emergency kit- Both first aid and also think about what you need if you break-down. Make sure you have wiper fluid in the upcoming winter months, and a blanket if you have no heat for a while, as you wait for roadside assistance.  Keep kitty-litter in the trunk as it helps the tires get traction on slippery roads.

#3 – Get some winter floor mats.  These are made of rubber, so the salt and dirt on your boots won’t wreck the carpet in your car.

#4 – Have a permanent garbage bin IN the car. Instead of stuffing tissues in the side-pockets, maybe put them in a receptacle.

#5 – Put the toys in one of those bins (see #1).  Instead of books and markers flying all over your car floor, keep them all in a car-only toy place, that will be a busy-box of sorts for the kids to have.

organize the car

That’s it. Now on to the cleaning.

#1 – Take everything out.

#2 – Clean it. Test out the e-cloth. I used the Interior, e-Auto Car Cleaning Kit.  It comes with:

  • one 20″x16″ Glass & Chrome Cloth, one 12.5”x12.5” Car Cleaning Cloth, a Water Atomizer, and a laundry and storage bag.car kit
  • Glass & Chrome Cloth (grey) cleans inside windows, outside windows, all metals
  • Car Cleaning Cloth (orange) cleans dashboards, armrests, spills, inside doors, fabric upholstery, leather upholstery, outside windowscar kit

#3 – And finally: Only put back the items you must have, into a bin or some type of container: Toys, Snacks, Emergency Kit (may or may not include a trunk potty- mom’s you know you need this!)  You are done.

The e-Auto Kit: What do I think?

Just spray the water and wipe. Can’t be easier. I am not sure you can’t do this with any little cloth and some water, but the beauty and difference of the e-cloth versus any old cloth in your house, is the e-cloth itself. No lint, and for whatever reason, it picks up the dirt unlike any rag I have.  You can check out their website for more info. on why they work so well.

I used the chrome & glass (grey) cloth for all the windows and the mirrors…and the glass parts of the dash. No streaks and no lint. It is way easier than window spray and paper towels- plus better for the environment.  Now, I am not saying that child labor laws don’t exist for a reason…but- using the e-cloths is a great and SAFE way to have your kids help you clean the inside of the car with just water and a cloth. You don’t have to worry that the twins kids will spray  each other in the eyes with chemicals or wash the windows with the leather-care cleaner. Not that this has happened, but it is definitely not happening with e-cloth! One of the many reasons why I really like this product. See what I did:

e cloth

before is pretty gross…I am not too thrilled about sharing that.

And this:

I had to keep going…I love my new clean car!

Once I was done cleaning, I put both cloths in the bag and threw them in the washer. I wash them just like regular cloths, but you have to remember not to use fabric softeners – which I don’t use anyway. Even if you forget and use the softeners, just run them again in a hot-water only wash and then they are fine again. Actually, these are guaranteed for 300 washes just like the rest of the e-cloth line. Easy.

Now that I have a dedicated set of e-cloths for the cars, I can store them right in the little bag and keep these in the garage on a hook, so I can find them right where I want to use them…always thinking, my friends!

Anyhoo…Now it’s your turn to try the e-Auto Car Kit! Check them out here!

Comparison of Spray-Mops: Review & Giveaway (closed)

Disclosure: I received a free e-Cloth Aqua Spray Floor Mop in exchange for writing a review on the blog.  As always I am 100% honest in my opinions on this blog.

eCloth spray mop Confessions. I love a good convenience product. No matter the chemicals or cost, the convenience factor is sometimes the determinant to whether I use a product or not. With food, it might be a can of condensed soup. Yup. I know how many crazy ingredients there are in that BPA ridden-can…but in a pinch, I love it. I have to confess that I do.  As far as the cleaning products in my house, I also must say, that I have loved some VERY questionably safe products, that have loads of toxic, endocrine disrupting buggers in them…but again, in a pinch, I have loved them.

What if the convenience food or product was as easy, and convenient as it is good for us?
Would we use it above all others? Choose it first?

I decided to put it to the test… with mops. Upon receiving a sample Aqua Spray Floor Mop from eCloth, I decided to test it against a well know spray-mop on the market, comparing apples to apples. Spray-mops, as opposed to mop-mops are made to replace the mop & the bucket. I detest the mop & bucket. So the spray-mop showdown is a winner; Either way, I get a clean floor without using a bucket.  Here’s my take on the comparison:

Using Chemicals

The best selling, wet-spraying floor mop (read: It rhymes with “wet/bet”) uses a chemical spray that smells like sunshine and you clean it up with a disposable cloth. It isn’t cheap, but it does work. They cost about $35 on Amazon for the starter-kit. But don’t let the low cost fool you. Since it uses disposable cloths, the replacements (20/pk) are about $12, and the cleaning solution, is at $11. So If I divide the work into 52 weeks, assuming I mop once a week (harhar!), in a year this would actually cost me:

· Initial investment: $35.00 (includes a mop, 2 pads, and a bottle of cleaning solution)
· Each disposable pad is $1.66 X 52 (weeks) assuming 1pad/wk= $86.32
· Solution for 20 cleanings: $0.55 per clean X 52 (weeks)= $28.60
· It takes 4 AAA batteries (at $2.50 a pack) to spray, assume you replace them once= $5.00
· Total cost for using the mop for one year: $154.92
· Total cost the second year, assuming it still works is the $154.92 minus the initial investment of the mop ($35.)= Cost after initial investment $ 119.00

Conversely, if you want a Chemical-Free Convenient spray-mop:

The e-Cloth version of the rhymes with ‘wet/bet’ is the new Aqua Spray Deep Clean Mop.
It has an interchangeable pad that fits the regular mop and also this new one, that is guaranteed up to 300 washes. It has the same e-cloth fiber technology that removes grease, dirt and over 99% of bacteria from hard floor surfaces using just water and the mop – No Chemicals Needed! Because it has the water build right in, in eliminates the need for a bucket- it is super convenient.

Cost= $49.99

As the website states, there are NO CHEMICALS to buy, so the cost savings is huge. You just wash the mop heads. Even if you only washed the mop head once a week, at 52 weeks a year, you’d have 5 ¾ years of use before you’d need to replace the pads!

It is literally LESS THAN HALF the cost (!!) of the “inexpensive” mop that they sell in the store! And the bonus is there are NO chemicals. If you have pets, infants, or children who tend to drop things and then put them in their mouths (5 second rule!) then you don’t want any nasty chemicals lurking on those floors! In sum: No chemical cleaners to buy, no pads to run out of, no batteries to replace, kills 99% of germs with just water.

To me it is a no-brainer. If:

It works.
It’s cheap.
It is environmentally safe.

A trifecta of winning. And I will choose it over the other guy, hands down.

Whether you use traditional store-bought cleaners, or make your own homemade versions…how nice would it be to only use a cloth and water? Yes. It would be nice, right? Microfiber cloths have popped up all over the place of late, and all claim to clean all kinds of surfaces with just water.  Just off the bat, I think this is a great idea- Seems the benefits would be:

  • Better for the environment- no more paper towels!
  • Less chemicals
  • More economical
  • Easy

I have used brands of microfiber, easily available at the big-box stores, that give me a weird feeling on my hands, or just kind of push the dirt around, so I just stop using them-  Or they don’t really do anymore than a regular rag would do. So, I didn’t really expect much from these e-cloths to be perfectly honest.

Well, I am happy to say that not only was I wrong, but I am so, so, so glad that I found these! Everyone that comes in my house gets a little demo- very annoying, but I just love these cloths!

The window cloth, is also the stainless steel cloth- It is amazing!  I just wet it and wiped.

Now, I have, of late been not liking my stainless steal appliances for the simple reason, that they get dirty with fingerprints constantly. Sticky fingers abound in my house and the chemicals used in the stainless cleaners are really smelly, toxic and expensive.  I kind of get grossed out with the residue they leave on my hands. With the e-cloth- I just wet it, squeezed the extra water out and wiped. Done.

That was it.

I keep cleaning.

Like, every day.

Those who have been in my house lately, may have noticed that there are fuzz-balls gathering in the corners, but my kitchen is sparkling! It is very motivating to get new cleaning tools or products that make you feel that you are doing something good for your house!

I gave my little demo to my husband on our windows…people, we are 4 years in this house and windows are not my priority.  They may get a total overhaul.  I used the same stainless cloth and wet it again, and wiped the window.  It looks streaky at first, and you would think that it would dry that way too, but it dries crystal clear. This is kind of a game changer for me.  I really always feel pulled away from the “good” environmentally safe products, in order to feel like my house is really disinfected…No more.  I still will use my products in the bathroom, but those mirrors are strictly being cleaned with the glass cloth- it is so easy and BETTER than the chemicals.  Better.

I cannot say enough about these cloths, only that I am going to buy more of them myself, and give them as house-warming gifts! I hope they send me more to review, so I actually want to clean my whole house, and not just my kitchen!

I am so thankful for the opportunity to try the e-cloth brand of microfiber cloths and I have to say, I will never give them back.  Never.  They are my new favorite thing that I have- ever.  Maybe I don’t get out much, but in the day to day regularity of cleaning my kitchen- these bad boys have my total love and support!

E-cloth sent me a Kitchen Pack which includes: one (1) 12.5″x12.5″ Kitchen Cloth and one (1)20″x16″ Glass & Polishing Cloth.  The glass and polishing cloth can be used on glass, mirror, stainless steel, chrome, granite, marble, and other shiny surfaces.

The e-cloths are by my standards, very environmentally friendly.  They eliminate the need for atleast 4 really harsh chemicals that would do the same jobs that these two cloths do.

They make cleaning easy.  Puleese. I hate cleaning.  These make it easy for real.

My kids can’t get injured by accident if they use them- chemicals would land them in the hospital- these cloths just land them…well, on top of some cloths.  By making them extremely kid friendly, they can help me clean without worry.  My kids can help me, I said. Chores can be done. Whoot!

I can eat off a surface that I know is free of germs and chemicals.  Knowing they get rid of 99% of germs and don’t just spread them around makes me feel like my house is actually clean and not just wiped. I can wash those germs right down my sink on a daily basis, and also wash my cloths thoroughly once a week, as they are tested for up to 300 machine washes!

Now, after I had totally soaked the glass cloth, I had read that you were supposed to spray your surface with water and then use the cloth. Or I could use the regular kitchen cloth and then the glass cloth to shine the surface and wipe it dry.  But…because I am “Hardly A Goddess” this isn’t how it worked out.  I just rushed ahead and used my soaked cloth all over a mirror, some windows, the stainless….”What did I just do?” I thought.

Then I saw how clean it all was.  And streak free.  And that was really easy.

So, I may have done it wrong the first time, but it worked so well, I went around and started wiping all the windows on my first floor.  It was a little crazy, but also very satisfying to see how easily I could make things clean.

before and after ecloth

Sigh.  So now I will do it the “right way.”  But the regular Kitchen Cloth you should totally wet and then wipe to your hearts content, on “ all types of hard surfaces such as stainless steel, enamel, ceramic, glass, chrome, granite, marble, slate, quartz, tile and wood (from their website).”

As an FYI, e-cloth was voted “BEST Cleaning Cloth & BEST Washable Mop” by REAL SIMPLE magazine.  For what it’s worth. Just saying.
