Strawberry Chocolate Chia Smoothie

Strawberry Chocolate Chia Smoothie

Last week, I worked with several sponsors to create chocolate recipes, one of which was Barlean’s. I made this Chocolate Mint Smoothie that was SO good, but I also made this Strawberry Chocolate Chia smoothie that I am sharing with you today.

I added chia seeds after my cousin came to visit and told me how she adds chia to her smoothies and lets the smoothie sit for about 10 minutes to plump up the seeds. Total game changer! This is a filling and delicious way that I am starting my mornings this week- addicted to this combination of strawberry and chocolate too! Now, if you are not familiar with chia seeds, number one…get out from under that rock…number two, these are not of the “cha, cha, cha, chia!” fame:

How can you resist the Bob Ross version…This is going on my holiday wish list!!

And number three, chia is SO good for you- let me tell you that WebMD notes that indeed the jury is still out on proven health and weight loss benefits, but that chia IS a “concentrated food containing healthy omega-3 fatty acids, carbohydrates, protein, fiber, antioxidants and calcium.” Specifically for one tablespoon, it adds 2-3 grams protein, 4.5 grams of fat, 6 grams carbs and 6 grams of fiber in addition to all the other great nutritional benefits!

But a little goes a long way- one tablespoon can pack 70 calories, so take care to measure when you are adding it to your smoothie. Here is the breakdown:

Strawberry Chocolate Chia Smoothie

8-12 oz. ice water
1 scoop Barlean’s Greens
1 scoop chocolate protein powder (Mine is Advocare of course but any will do)
5-6 frozen strawberries
1/3 of a frozen or fresh banana
1 TBSP. chia seeds

Add ingredients in the order above and blend until mixed. Let sit 10 minutes so the chia can “gel” up, and enjoy!!

Strawberry Chocolate Chia Smoothie

After a week of “Choctoberfest” and all-things chocolate, I needed to lighten my load a little! I have been drinking these all week, and for the life of me, I cannot get a good picture with natural light! It has been raining here all week, and I am sorry to say, that smoothies are hard enough to get a nice picture of with good lighting, but with rain and dark skies…well, you have to imagine that these smoothies look way better in person! If you love the strawberry and chocolate combo, then I highly recommend this take!

Strawberry Chocolate Chia Smoothie

Total Time: 5 minutes

Yield: 1 large smoothie

Serving Size: 16 oz.

Strawberry Chocolate Chia Smoothie

Letting this sit for 10 minutes before drinking is key to letting the chia seeds set up- then you have a delicious and nutritious start to your day!

Ingredients

  • 8-12 oz. ice water
  • 1 scoop Barlean's Greens
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder (Mine is Advocare of course but any will do)
  • 5-6 frozen strawberries
  • 1/3 of a frozen or fresh banana
  • 1 TBSP. chia seeds

Instructions

  1. Add ingredients in the order above and blend until mixed. Let sit 10 minutes so the chia can "gel" up, and enjoy!!

Notes

This is a great on-the-go breakfast for busy mornings! Make it ahead by placing all the ingredients in the blender jar the night before and setting in the fridge. Just wake up and blend!

Mint Chocolate Greens Smoothie

Mint Chocolate Greens Smoothie #Choctoberfest

You know I love my smoothies. I’ve made orange, berry, and pineapple-green… I was going strong there where I had one every morning during the summer. I am not sure why I stopped, but I think I am officially out of any rut I might have been in. Enter the mint-chocolate in this Mint Chocolate Greens Smoothie!

Mint Chocolate Greens Smoothie

I used the Barlean’s Chocolate Silk Greens- which in a nutshell, are amazing! It’s powdered greens are full of vital antioxidants from fruits and veggies. The delicious chocolate flavor comes from Fair-Trade, antioxidant-rich cocoa. It’s delicious hot or cold with no added sugars. You’ve got to try it to believe it. Seriously.

As if that wasn’t enough goodness in this smoothie, I added another Barlean’s powerhouse, the Essential Women Omega-Swirl in Chocolate Mint flavor. Look at this stuff:

Doesn’t it look like chocolate syrup?! It tastes like it too! Do you take your Omega-3s? They are essential fatty acids needed by everyone, everyday for the rest of our lives. Most people get their Omega-3s from fish capsules or flax oil, but Barlean’s emulsified the flax oil to give it a smoothie like texture and used all natural ingredients to give it a chocolate mint flavor. It’s perfect for #Choctoberfest. You can use it in smoothies, in yogurt, oatmeal or even on top of ice cream. Ah-mazing.

Get Your Greens Smoothie #SundaySupper

Get Your greens smoothieMy sister will get a kick out of this one.

She came over to my house one day at least seven years ago, and had a brownish-green smoothie…this was before green smoothies were a thing- anyway, she came over, and my husband and I asked her what was in it, since it looked extremely unappetizing to us. She proceeded to list all the goodies inside the wonderous brown liquid, and then finally said, “and it has parsely too. That way you get your greens!” Well wonderful. In order to “get your greens” you have to drink a sludge of brown liquid. Not for me.

So all these years later, we can now see the wisdom of my sister’s ways, as we put green things into our smoothies on a regular basis now. And every time- yes, every single time- we say, “and that way you get your greens!”

Not only are green smoothies popular now, there is a blogger who is all but dedicated her entire blog to them: Simple Green Smoothies. She has a 101-type of intro on green smoothies, so I sort of follow her master plan:

Leafy greens + Liquid + Fruit

Seems smart to start there, and since she has a whole blog dedicated to green smoothies, I figure she must know her stuff. Here’s what I did:

Leafy Green: Kale

add to: Water

Blend

add Fruit: Frozen pineapple, frozen banana, and frozen peaches

Blend Again.

Done.

It was delicious. And I think because the fruit was frozen, it adds an even better taste to it. She recommends wisely, I think to blend the greens and the liquid together first so it gets nice and mashed together. Then adding the fruit after to put it all together. I think you could add a protein powder in vanilla flavor if that is your extra healthy boost, but you can totally have this as is without the protein.

So for formality sake, here is the recipe:
