Ultimate Coffee: October Coffee Chat

It’s that time of the month- NO! I mean, it’s time for coffee chat! Oy!

So, what I would tell you if we were having coffee together this fine Saturday, is:

This is sort of how it’s been going! I am saying the exact wrong thing at the wrong time, at the wrong volume! Funny to me, and harmless most of the time, but mostly I just walk around hoping that I didn’t just offend someone!

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you,

Personally, my kids are doing great and are healthy. Bruises that they might have are from each other and not bullies so we’re good there. We are getting great grades so far, and one is getting her braces off this month- so fun! We have a birthday to celebrate at the end of the month, and Halloween too. So my kids are gearing up for some serious fun around here, including carving some pumpkins very soon!Making pretzels with kids is so fun! And delicious!

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you,

My half marathon went nowhere and now my marathon plans are sort of de-railed. I have bronchitus. My daughter has strep, so at least I don’t have that! Bronchits is sort of worse for me, as it typically takes forever for me to get over- I haven’t run at all in over 10 days- not horrible unless you are mid-training and I am. So I can’t do this weekend’s planned half-marathon, and I am not sure I’ll be able to do the marathon- hoping I can find a November or December marathon though in the NY, CT, MA, NH, RI area….anyone know?

Yes. Yes, I can.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you,

On the food side, this blog just ended #PumpkinWeek- which is all things pumpkin, all the time. I never realized how many pumpkin recipes that I already have- seriously I have a lot:

Pumpkin Mousse Mini Pies
Chicken Enchiladas with Pumpkin Sauce
Pumpkin Nut Crumble Cake
Mom’s Best Pumpkin Bread
Whole Wheat Pumpkin Loaf
Pumpkin Peanut Butter Granola
Pumpkin Spice Latte
Roasted Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpotchies (oatmeal cookies with pumpkin)
Pumpkin Corn & Crab Soup
Healthy Pumpkin Pudding

See?!! And I don’t LOVE pumpkin the way you’d think by looking at this list. I clearly do really like it a lot though! I like chocolate a whole lot more…and that’s why I am so excited October is also #Choctoberfest in these parts! Chocolate all the time on this blog coming up, the 16th-21st! Stay tuned for that, since a TON of other food bloggers are in on this and there are sure to be a boat-load of yummy recipes to pin for your next chocolate fix!

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you,

My other blogging goodie that I have been promoting is the Genius Blogger’s Toolkit. Have you seen this? If you are blogger anyway, this is a goldmine of resources-  I am an affiliate, but I also have experience with a couple of the resources that are included and it is sort of mind-blowing the money you save if you were to buy it all- but it is an investment, so if you aren’t serious about your blog making money, then this may not be your guy- It’s only available until Monday the 9th, so check it out HERE (affilate link).

Weeeelll. That is about it.  Oh! And I read 2 really great books:

Station Eleven

and

Still Here

Now, that’s it. I’m Out. Happy October!! I am linking up with the other Ultimate Coffee folks too, at Confessions of a Mother Runner if you want to check out all the fun!

Ultimate Coffee Chat: September

ultimate coffee

Like that picture? It’s from last year! I have been sharing my coffee-chats for over a year now and you have been telling me how much you like the general-style updates. So I am keeping it up- maybe late and maybe boring, but I am also keeping it real!

Here’s what I would tell you if you and I were sitting on my porch sipping our hot bevvies!

If we were having coffee I’d tell you: It’s freaking cold out here!

I love Fall!

Fall came fast huh? I am so glad since I LOVE fall. All things fall. The weather, the running weather, the smells, the decrease in bugs, the increase in routine, school starting, football stuff, soccer stuff, cozy things all around me like sweatshirts and blankets…I can go on! It goes without too much emphasis then, that I love pumpkin and apple everything! YES. Fall is my guy. I know it’s not quite leaf-jumping weather yet, but I couldn’t resist this picture- the boys were so little! Time is a-flying! Welcome to Fall my friends!

If we were having coffee I’d tell you: I love Fall for running.

Rolling to run

Now, I spoke about running weather. It is p-e-r-f-e-c-t here right now. Cool enough so I don’t run out of steam just because I am baking in the sun, and warm enough that I am not even layering yet. Perfect! Remember last month, I said I needed new sneakers? Well I still don’t have them and I am going okay- I can only think how great it will feel once I actually have some cushion on these feet! I am squishing an 18 week training plan into just 8 weeks (yes, I have a sense that I will tweak my planned runs quite a bit!) I mostly just use a plan so I can have an idea of what I should be running to be ready, but I don’t stay to it hard and fast if I am reducing the time like this- not if I don’t want to be hurt anyway! Do you use a plan for your racing or running? I’d love to know so share- please!

If we were having coffee I’d tell you: I just finished a great book

…which I will review in depth later this week on the blog, but it is so relevant for NOW. It’s this one:

In a quick snippet: It’s about four Russian late-thirty somethings who met in Russia but all live in NYC now. It revolves around a questions of our virtual lives- how we actually live in real life versus on Facebook or social media in general. Sounds boring, but to care about the book means to be invested in the characters- and I was. They are well thought out and interesting to me, as a window of what it is like for them as immigrants in the United States, but also how we share the commonality of the absurdity of online-lives. Pretty interesting, right? Stay tuned for a full review.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you: That’s all really.

Oh! Wait! I forgot too- I have been re-painting my upstairs bathroom!

Repainting this ugly thing!

Look at this beast! So ugly- but so useful. I will have to do a post on that too- I painted the cabinets (this times-two) and walls, and actually some of the hardware too- some of the paint they have now is awesome! It has awoken (waked?- what is the word for this?) in me both a love of painting and hate of it. I am not sure yet  how I feel. It is making the rest of my house look perfectly awful though, so I need to get cracka-lackin’ and paint the rest of it! Good thing I am STILL not working right?! Ha! Gotta look on the bright side my friends, keeping it sunny!

Have a wonderful holiday weekend and I loved sharing my porch with you this month!

So I have missed a lot. Well, I think that is clear. But I mean, I have missed you all a lot! This summer is flying by huh?!

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I haven’t done any back to school yet:

Not buying for or even thinking about. I am sure many of you have gone back to school already or your kids did anyway, but mine go back on the 30th. Whoohoot!  I only know this because I got sort of mom-shamed into not know the date my kids actually go back…but honestly, I rely on other people to tell me dates of where I need to be atleast half of my life. I seem to do a lot of running around in the summer as well as the school year, I guess. It has been so long since I have spent so much time at home and honestly, I have enjoyed the lack of schedule, but am looking forward to the routine that fall brings. Anyone else like this?

cute kids

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I am officially an iPhone gal now!

Those who know me, and most of you reading this do (!), know that I have been fighting getting a “real” phone forever. I have had a hand-me-down iPhone5 for a couple of years, and my daughter uses one, but I just didn’t want to be a slave to the phone- I am on the computer and social most days and a lot, so I just wanted my time to be less on the phone as a computer- get it? Three things pushed me to finally get it:

  1. I need it to find my way around this fall traveling all over for travel soccer- last year I got lost a few times and my kid and someone else’s kids (since we help drive) were late. Not good.
  2. My iPhone daughter doesn’t have a plan since she’s so young, but she can text- but not anyone in our house since none of us had iPhones. Just Samsung. Stupid Apple.
  3. I couldn’t get any group messages past three separate emails- my phone couldn’t handle the texts, and wasn’t able to “download” the messages. It literally sort of just blew up.

What I’ll miss:

  1. The unplugging effect. I am the only person I know who could actually not look at any social or email for a week of vacation…because I couldn’t on my phone.
  2. Now I have to see emogis. Ugh. They were just boxes on my old phone. *My friends, words work nicely. I don’t need a picture too. At least not every time. Memes and gifs on the other hand are super fun and will get me in a load of trouble!

iphone upgrade

Wow, I had a lot to say there. Okay then!

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I am wondering if I should do another marathon or only do a Half.

It hurts, the marathon. Both the training runs that get super long and also the aftermath. My old-lady body doesn’t love it. I have always said that I am not sure that I am built for marathons and I still think it’s true. I can do it. I know this. So I am super glad that I have done my 2. But I take Advil more now. And it takes a lot of time to do those longer runs, and I am not sure I have that time.

The half-marathon I think may be my sweet spot. I feel great leading up to it, I get good times, I feel good after too. I have running consistently this summer, but I like fall races, so if any of you want to weigh in on this one, please do!

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I have been working a lot more, writing posts here on the blog:

My focus seems to have shifted a bit more toward food- sometime healthy and sometimes just fun or functional for my 4-kid family. I don’t get a lot of action about my fitness-type posts but I like to re-cap in monthly posts like this one. Travel and food and books seems to be my jam right now. Oh, and randomness. That of course is my overall personality and blogging style, so friends, I am not going away, just shifting a bit! I hope you will continue to read here though, and connect in some way.

If you missed them, here are some recent posts:

So that about wraps it up! I hope you have a wonderful rest of your Saturday and great Sunday tomorrow! Happy August! I am linking up with my other bloggers this morning over at
