Ultimate Coffee Chat: August Edition

So I have missed a lot. Well, I think that is clear. But I mean, I have missed you all a lot! This summer is flying by huh?!

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I haven’t done any back to school yet:

Not buying for or even thinking about. I am sure many of you have gone back to school already or your kids did anyway, but mine go back on the 30th. Whoohoot!  I only know this because I got sort of mom-shamed into not know the date my kids actually go back…but honestly, I rely on other people to tell me dates of where I need to be atleast half of my life. I seem to do a lot of running around in the summer as well as the school year, I guess. It has been so long since I have spent so much time at home and honestly, I have enjoyed the lack of schedule, but am looking forward to the routine that fall brings. Anyone else like this?

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I am officially an iPhone gal now!

Those who know me, and most of you reading this do (!), know that I have been fighting getting a “real” phone forever. I have had a hand-me-down iPhone5 for a couple of years, and my daughter uses one, but I just didn’t want to be a slave to the phone- I am on the computer and social most days and a lot, so I just wanted my time to be less on the phone as a computer- get it? Three things pushed me to finally get it:

  1. I need it to find my way around this fall traveling all over for travel soccer- last year I got lost a few times and my kid and someone else’s kids (since we help drive) were late. Not good.
  2. My iPhone daughter doesn’t have a plan since she’s so young, but she can text- but not anyone in our house since none of us had iPhones. Just Samsung. Stupid Apple.
  3. I couldn’t get any group messages past three separate emails- my phone couldn’t handle the texts, and wasn’t able to “download” the messages. It literally sort of just blew up.

What I’ll miss:

  1. The unplugging effect. I am the only person I know who could actually not look at any social or email for a week of vacation…because I couldn’t on my phone.
  2. Now I have to see emogis. Ugh. They were just boxes on my old phone. *My friends, words work nicely. I don’t need a picture too. At least not every time. Memes and gifs on the other hand are super fun and will get me in a load of trouble!

Wow, I had a lot to say there. Okay then!

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I am wondering if I should do another marathon or only do a Half.

It hurts, the marathon. Both the training runs that get super long and also the aftermath. My old-lady body doesn’t love it. I have always said that I am not sure that I am built for marathons and I still think it’s true. I can do it. I know this. So I am super glad that I have done my 2. But I take Advil more now. And it takes a lot of time to do those longer runs, and I am not sure I have that time.

The half-marathon I think may be my sweet spot. I feel great leading up to it, I get good times, I feel good after too. I have running consistently this summer, but I like fall races, so if any of you want to weigh in on this one, please do!


If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I have been working a lot more, writing posts here on the blog:

My focus seems to have shifted a bit more toward food- sometime healthy and sometimes just fun or functional for my 4-kid family. I don’t get a lot of action about my fitness-type posts but I like to re-cap in monthly posts like this one. Travel and food and books seems to be my jam right now. Oh, and randomness. That of course is my overall personality and blogging style, so friends, I am not going away, just shifting a bit! I hope you will continue to read here though, and connect in some way.

    We start school a week before labor day this year which is the earliest they have ever done it. My kids are HS and college so they just Amazon everything they need and fortunately I don’t have to do it so much anymore. Thanks for joining us for coffee today!

    My kids go back to school on Aug 16. Looking forward to getting back into a routine! Sounds like the half marathon in your sweet spot! Full marathon training is a big time commitment!

    I wish my kids went back on the 30th. Mine go back 8/14 and the wheel are already in motion with orientation etc. It’s a total August buzzkill. No shame at all in not knowing exactly when they go back. I stay in denial as long as possible about that stuff. Haha!

    I have a phone without unlimited texts, data, or call time. So I probably spend much less time on it than many people. And then sometimes I take a little social media break (like this week).

    Can’t weigh in on the marathon thing, having never run one.

    Welcome to the I-phone world! I am sure I couldn’t survive without mine- LOL! I have never run a full marathon but I am thinking that you should be jumping up and down with excitement to do it to commit to the training. I will never be there 🙂 Enjoy the rest of summer!

    Do the half marathon!!! You should be enjoying your running – so do whatever makes you feel joyful. A half marathon is NOTHING to snark at – it’s still a great competition!! I love you!!!

      I am not snarking at all! I am not diminishing it at all- just wondering if I will get hurt, which I don’t want, but I like doing them both- it’s just easier on these bones to do the half!

    Although I am currently sidelined, I do have visions of another 26.2 dancing in my head. The half marathon is (hands-down) my game, though. Having done five fulls and two ultras, though, my (irrational) brain reassures me I have it in me to do another. My (rational) paranoid-recovery-alter-ego, though, tells me not even think about it for now. Fortunately (?), another 26.2 will not even be an option for the rest of 2017…so there’s that 😉

    I say run what makes you happy! I love the half marathon distance. Training for a full is so time-consuming, so be sure that you’re committed to enjoying those long runs before signing up for another full. 🙂 If you can’t enjoy the training, you are less likely to enjoy the race (imo).

    Welcome to the iPhone world! I try to unplug about once a week if at all possible and I feel like it helps a lot with sanity in general. I’ve been using my phone a lot more since my family got an unlimited data plan. 😡

    I’ve been slacking a lot in the blogging world lately but hoping to get back into it soon!

    Nothing wrong with not knowing the exact date the kiddos go back to school ….just means you’re enjoying having them home! I had to ask my youngest the other day what day he goes back …but then again he is a junior in high school and the other is headed back for his sophomore year at college. Time flies! At times, I do miss all of the ‘back to school’ shopping….but it is so much easier now.

    I love that you are diversified in your blogging …I’ve toyed with doing the same thing as I have many other interests besides just fitness/running/cycling 🙂 Maybe you should start a non-fitness related link-up we could all join in on!!

    My son starts school next Monday! I just think it’s way too early to be starting school. One year our schools were under construction and we started after Labor Day. Best summer ever!

    I definitely think the half is my sweet spot. I would love to run another marathon, because 5 feels like a good number, but I don’t know if it’s going to happen. We’ll see…

    Welcome to the iPhone world. I love mine, a lot. It’s a tool for work for me, first and foremost, but I still enjoy it, a lot.

    I’m considering a half marathon next summer, I miss all the training. A marathon is not on my radar though. I can handle running for 2 hours, but even at the end, I get a bit bored. I can’t imagine a full marathon! Good luck on which ever you decide on, I’ll enjoy following you along.

    My son starts school in September, and will be wearing a uniform, pieces I was able get online from Old Navy or the Gap. I did all my shopping online so I can avoid the crowds and the picked over racks! I’m really surprised how on the ball I was on this. That is not typical of me.

      Hi Lucie! Is this his first year? That is so exciting! I wish my kids had uniforms- It is a constant struggle for what is appropriate- not much! LOL! Yes, I get bored, but I am thinking of trying to join some group runs for those long ones! I will keep you posted!
